About this model

A curved section of a Roman amphitheatre in the style of the Colosseum: three storeys of open arches with Doric, Ionic and Corinthian half-columns, a solid attic with small windows on top, and one end broken off in steps the way the real ring is. Behind the arches runs a corridor, and behind that a solid inner block. Each laptop blade stands in that block, one per bay, so from outside you look through the arches at the corridor and a plain wall, never at a board. You pick 2, 3 or 4 computers and the ring grows by one bay each: 0.95 m tall every time, about 0.48 m wide with two and 0.80 m with four, about 0.49 m deep. Air comes in through the arches, drops through the lattice floor of the corridor into the hollow base, rises past each board and leaves through the lattice fronts of the seat steps on top. At night LED strips under the corridor floors light the arches from inside. One 260 W supply runs everything; the supply, the network switch and the shared disk lie in the base under the block. To swap a blade you lift the seat steps above it and pull the blade straight up by its tab.

Worth knowing

About 8.1 kg of filament with two computers and 13.5 kg with four (roughly 330 to 540 hours on a fast printer). The ring is a segment, not a full oval: a closed ring that holds even two laptop boards would be over a metre across. The block walls and the arches carry the top; the blades only stand in their shoes. The seat steps are held by their lip and weight, not glued, because they are the way in.

Prices with VAT as shown in October 2026. Shipping, glue and the boards are not included. Also not counted, if you do not own them: a multimeter (about €8.56) and a power strip (about €15.12).

Budget black PETG.

Drives: every board keeps the drive its laptop came with (system only), so there is nothing to buy. A board bought without one needs a 256 GB M.2 2280 drive (approx. €56). Optional, not in the total: one shared disk of 1 TB or more for the render manager's shared folder, on one laptop board, in its own M.2 slot, or in a USB case (approx. €19) on the base floor. Reuse an old one, or buy a 1 TB M.2 2280 drive for approx. €136–146. Drive prices are approximate (October 2026): check before buying.

To print it at this size: 13.5 kg of PETG. Add 10% for waste and test pieces and that is 15 spools of 1 kg, approx. €210–285 with the PETG below (the shopping list above already includes filament). Print time, estimated: about 717 h with the standard 0.4 mm nozzle (Ender-3 V3 SE class), 447 h with a 0.6 mm nozzle.

Print times are slicer estimates (OrcaSlicer) and may vary by ±15 %.
