About this model

A chunky toy fish tank, not a copy of any real one. The tank is a square light aqua box. On its front and its back hangs a big navy light box, almost as wide as the tank: its face is the water, cut wide open, with three angelfish, four strands of seaweed and a row of pebbles left standing in it as dark shapes. Each fish has one small lit eye. A 2 m LED strip hides behind the seaweed inside each box and lights the aqua wall behind the face, so at night the water glows and the fish and seaweed stand dark in it. On top sits the navy hood with nine slim vents on every side, lit from inside. Up to four laptop blades stand in a row in the tank. Its walls are solid and the light boxes are glued on the outside of them, so from outside you never see a computer board, from any angle. Air comes in through the slatted vents in the plinth and leaves through the hood. You pick 2, 3 or 4 computers and the model stays the same size: 0.55 x 0.50 m, 80 cm tall. This is the first model where a lit feature covers most of a side, and the first to use a light box. How evenly the water glows is only modelled, not yet seen on a real print. The light boxes stand 30 mm proud on the front and the back, so the model is 545 mm deep and a knock can break one off.

Worth knowing

About 10.6 kg of filament with two computers and 12.3 kg with four (roughly 360 to 420 hours on a fast printer), in two colours: light aqua for the tank walls and the hood's inner wall, and navy for the hood, its floor plate and the two light boxes. Each light box is four flat pieces glued together and then onto the tank wall; the face is only 1.2 mm thick and the box stands 2.5 cm out, so do not knock it or pick the model up by it. How evenly the water glows has only been worked out on paper, not seen on a real print. The hood (plate, cells and inner wall glued into one) is not glued down because it is the way in; lift it straight up with both hands under the edge of its roof. It needs five LED strips in all: three 2 m (the usual one for the base glow, plus one hidden in each of the two light boxes) and two 1 m for the hood, one for each half of its inner wall.

Prices with VAT as shown in October 2026. Shipping, glue and the boards are not included. Also not counted, if you do not own them: a multimeter (about €8.56) and a power strip (about €15.12).

Budget black PETG.

Drives: every board keeps the drive its laptop came with (system only), so there is nothing to buy. A board bought without one needs a 256 GB M.2 2280 drive (approx. €56). Optional, not in the total: one shared disk of 1 TB or more for the render manager's shared folder, on one laptop board, in its own M.2 slot, or in a USB case (approx. €19) on the base floor. Reuse an old one, or buy a 1 TB M.2 2280 drive for approx. €136–146. Drive prices are approximate (October 2026): check before buying.

To print it at this size: 12.3 kg of PETG. Add 10% for waste and test pieces and that is 14 spools of 1 kg, approx. €196–266 with the PETG below (the shopping list above already includes filament). Print time, estimated: about 670 h with the standard 0.4 mm nozzle (Ender-3 V3 SE class), 415 h with a 0.6 mm nozzle.

Print times are slicer estimates (OrcaSlicer) and may vary by ±15 %.
