Pi Tower

A lattice observation tower around your Raspberry Pi 5 cluster: one storey per board, a lit deck on top.

Designed and checked in CAD. Not built in real life yet.

In the plan

What you print

One to four Raspberry Pi 5 boards, each with the official Active Cooler, sit on printed sleds inside the tower's lift core, one storey per board. Air comes in through the arches of the plinth, rises past the boards and leaves through an 80 mm Noctua fan under the observation deck. Ethernet, USB and the power cables all leave at the back, and every sled slides out at the back. One USB light string lights the deck windows, the lift shaft, the antenna platform, a red light on the antenna tip and the floodlight slots in the plinth. Height 342 mm with one board, 432 mm with four; footprint 143 to 179 mm square. It is a generic lattice tower with orange and white aviation bands, not a copy of any named tower.

Fit

What it fits

Board
Raspberry Pi 5, 85 x 56 mm, M2.5 holes 58 x 49 mm apart source
Cooler
The official Active Cooler on every board, 13.7 mm tall source
On your printer
Every part fits a 220 mm bed; the biggest is the plinth for four boards, 179 x 179 mm. Every part prints without support, the way the STL is turned.

Worth knowing

  • Nothing has been printed, no board has run in it and nothing was measured. The fit is checked in CAD against Raspberry Pi's own drawing and 3D model; the temperatures are a calculation.
  • The fan is required. With it (we assume 30 % of its rated 55.5 m3/h gets through the tower) the air warms by about 2 K per board at 12 W; without it only the chimney draught moves the air, roughly 20 K warmer at the top with four boards at 4 W each. Raspberry Pi says the boards throttle at 80 °C.
  • Every board needs the official Active Cooler. Other coolers, HATs and the PoE+ HAT do not fit: version 1 has no PoE option.
  • HDMI and the GPIO header are only reachable with the sled pulled out: the tower is made for boards that run without a screen.
  • The light is a glow for a dim room, not a lamp. 1.35 W rated, brightness not measured by us.
  • The back of the tower has no lattice bracing so the sleds can come out. How stiff the stack is without it, nobody has tested.
