Instrument
Trumpet
Three valves and a mouthpiece, and that is all it takes. You make the note yourself, and it carries through the whole house.
Tap a valve, then the bell. Drag the trumpet to turn it. On a computer it also works with the keyboard: JKL for the valves, Space to blow.
No valve pressed. It sounds C’.
With the same valve position, lip tension alone gets you these five natural notes, and the whole row shifts along as soon as you press a valve.
Listen A call of the kind the brass band plays on the village square, eight seconds. That is about where you are after a year.

Who it is for
Is it for you?
- From age 8
- The note is played against the front teeth, and those have to be the permanent ones. Usually that is the case at eight. Younger: early musical education, from 5.
- Starting out
- No prior knowledge and no trumpet of your own. We provide a hire instrument for the first year, at no extra cost.
- After three months
- Six to eight notes, cleanly started, and the first short pieces. The call in the sample takes about a year.
- Practising at home
- Ten minutes a day is enough, and it beats an hour on Sunday. The lip needs repetition, not stamina.
- Brass band
- If you want to, you go to your first rehearsal with the band in the village (Musikkapelle) in your second year. We sign you up and come along the first time.
- Adults
- The embouchure takes a few weeks at any age, and there is no way round it. Adults get through those slow weeks more easily.
Lessons
One to one, then in a section
Everyone builds the embouchure on their own, so lessons are one to one. From the second year a group lesson for two is added once a month, because brass music is played together.
Prices are per session. Billing is monthly. During the Tirol school holidays there are no lessons and nothing is charged.
Teachers
Who you sit with
Georg Falkner
Trumpet, wind ensemble
He has played in a brass band in the valley for thirty years and teaches the way it is needed there: a clean embouchure, steady counting, pieces you can join in with on a Sunday. Anyone who would rather head towards jazz gets jazz. The first weeks run on the mouthpiece alone, which is already loud enough for a flat.
Teaches Tuesday and Thursday, evenings.
The first lesson is there for trying things out.
You get a trumpet in your hands and, a few minutes later, your first note of your own. You need to bring nothing.
