Instrument
Drums
The one instrument you can play before you have read a single note. Your first beat is there after ten minutes, and you can hear straight away whether it is steady.
Tap a drum head or a cymbal. Drag the kit to turn it. On a computer you can also play with the keyboard: F bass drum, J snare, K hi-hat, DGH toms.
Listen A straight beat with a fill, eight seconds. Exactly what gets practised in the first few months.

Pick a part and this line tells you what it is for.

Eight steps,three drums
The beat everyone here learns first is already set. Switch cells off and on again, and you hear what is missing and what has to carry the bar.
Ready, 100 beats per minute. Nothing sounds until you press play.
Who it is for
Is it for you?
- From age 7
- Both feet have to reach the pedals while the hands are already doing something else. At seven that works for most children. Younger: early musical education, from 5.
- Starting out
- No prior knowledge and no reading music. The first lessons are counting, sitting properly and one single beat.
- After three months
- A straight beat over four bars, with a fill across the toms at the end. Roughly what you hear in the sample above.
- Practising at home
- For the first six months a practice pad and a pair of sticks are enough, under 50 euros together. The usual second step is an electronic kit with headphones.
- Volume
- An acoustic kit is loud enough that ear protection goes with it, and in a rented flat it is almost never a good idea. So the acoustic kit stays here, and at home you practise on a pad or on electronic drums.
- Adults
- Most arrive with a band in their head that they want to play in. The work is almost always in the legs, not in the hands.
Lessons
One to one,on a real kit
There are two kits in the room. Your teacher sits at the second one and plays, instead of standing next to you and explaining.
Prices are per session. Billing is monthly. During the Tirol school holidays there are no lessons and nothing is charged.
Teachers
Who you sit with
Simon Hörtnagl
Drums, percussion
He has taught for eight years and plays in two bands in the Oberland. Every first lesson starts on the kit and not on a practice pad, because nobody comes here for a rubber cushion. With adults he asks for three songs they want to play along to and builds the lessons out of them.
Teaches Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, afternoons and evenings.
The first lesson is there for trying things out.
Sticks are ready and you need no sheet music. You sit down at the kit, we show you the first beat, and then you decide.
