Instrument
Flute
At first all you need is air. The note is made at the edge of a hole, and the fingers come later.
Tap the keys. Drag the flute to turn it. On a computer you can also play with the keyboard: ASDFGHJK.
Listen A scale up and back down, then a short tune, eight seconds. The scale is what sits on the music stand in month three.

Breath
The air comes first
In the first weeks you practise almost one thing only: holding a note, evenly, without it tipping over at the end. The fingerings after that take two hours to learn.
The bar stands for eight seconds. That is how long a note carries after a few weeks of lessons.
Hold it down with the mouse, a finger or the space bar. The note held is the last one you played on the keyboard or in the row of notes.
Who it is for
Is it for you?
- From age 7
- Your right arm has to be long enough to hold the flute across without the shoulder riding up. For shorter arms there is a curved head joint, which shortens the hold by a good twenty centimetres. Younger: early musical education, from 5.
- Starting out
- No prior knowledge and no flute of your own. The first lesson is the head joint on its own, because the note comes first and the fingerings come after.
- After three months
- A scale over one octave, clean and with no breathy noise, plus the first short pieces. Roughly what you hear in the sample above.
- Practising at home
- For the first year you get a hire flute from us. You buy your own once it is clear that it will last, and we go to the specialist shop with you beforehand.
- Adults
- The flute is light, it fits in a drawer, and through a flat wall you hear it less than a trumpet. At the start the breath is more work than the fingers.
Lessons
One to one, every week
We teach the flute one to one. The embouchure looks different on every mouth, and that is hard to work on in a group.
Prices are per session. Billing is monthly. During the Tirol school holidays there are no lessons and nothing is charged.
Teachers
Who you stand with
Katharina Brunnthaler
Flute, recorder
She has played in the village band since school and has taught for nine years. Every lesson opens with five minutes on the head joint alone, even with advanced players, because that is where a fault shows up first. With children she works through pictures instead of anatomy: the air should move a candle at the other end of the room, not blow it out.
Teaches Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, afternoons and evenings.
The first lesson is there for trying things out.
Bring nothing, a hire flute is ready for you. Most people have their first note after ten minutes, and the trial lesson is not meant to do more than that.
