On technique

I paint with acrylic and modelling paste on canvas. Into the still-wet paint I lay ordinary elastic gauze bandage and press it in. I repeat this layer by layer until the ridges rise from the canvas.

Studio photo: pale strips of gauze bandage laid into still-wet purple paint, on a canvas with a pink ground.

About

Anna Schley attended the arts-focused upper secondary school in Landstraße, Vienna, and in her seventh year of secondary education, following the example of the Vienna Secessionists, abandoned the academic path. She took odd jobs and travelled the beautiful world, and visited, lived and worked in the Caribbean, Brazil, Italy, Austria, Holland, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, the Philippines, Tunisia, Madagascar, Egypt, Germany, Switzerland and Israel. In those years, self-taught and with the help of friends and mentors, she studied art in private and state museums and in public spaces, engaged with the various cultures and with architecture, and trained her eye so that she, too, might one day create masterly art.
